Goats on the Job: Clearing Brush Along East Idaho Canals

Spring is here, and that means our goats are back to work! At Goat Grazers & Site Services, we’ve kicked off the season with a brush-clearing project along some of the canal systems here in East Idaho. If you've driven by one of our herds lately, you’ve probably seen them hard at work munching their way through thick brush, tall grass, and stubborn weeds.

Why Use Goats?

We get this question a lot and the answer is pretty simple: goats are one of the most effective, environmentally friendly ways to clear land. Unlike heavy equipment or chemical sprays, goats gently graze down overgrowth without tearing up the soil or introducing harmful substances into the ecosystem. Plus, they can get into places that machines just can’t, like the steep, uneven banks of irrigation canals.

They’re especially good at:

  • Reducing fire hazards by eating dry, flammable brush

  • Improving access to and around water systems

  • Managing noxious weeds like thistle, knapweed, and leafy spurge

  • Encouraging healthier native plants by clearing out the competition

Helping the Land and the Community

This particular project focuses on canals near Rexburg areas that are tough to maintain with traditional equipment. These overgrown sections haven’t just been unsightly; they’ve become potential fire risks and made water access more difficult. Our goats are helping to change that, one bite at a time.

Local residents have told us they love seeing the goats out there doing their thing. It’s a win-win: cleaner land, less noise and pollution, and a more natural way to manage overgrowth. And let’s be honest who doesn’t enjoy watching a bunch of goats with a job to do?

Managed Grazing Makes a Difference

This isn’t a “set-it-and-forget-it” kind of service. Our team monitors the goats daily, rotating them through sections of land to make sure the job gets done right without overgrazing. We set up portable fencing, provide fresh water, and check the herd's health and progress throughout the job.

It’s all part of our commitment to responsible land stewardship here in East Idaho.
